British betting will likely benefit from a 5 percent boost in businessover the next 3 years because of the Olympics ‘effect’ according to Sheffield Hallam University’s Sports Industry Research Centre. The unit attributed the gain to a relaxation in gambling laws which has made sports betting easier and more acceptable, and the rise in popularity of online sites, coupled with the increased interest in sports owing to the popularity of the Olympic games.   

A spokesperson said that the it was not too far fetched that the Olympics would have a similar effect as the 2010 World Cup, which brought in over £1 billion in bets.
